Layo Teraga: Ethiopia
Layo Teraga: Ethiopia
Earlier this summer, we went to Chicago to try coffees with the folks from Crop to Cup, our primary Ethiopian import partner over the past few years. While the cupping table had a number of very nice (expensive) coffees, this one ended up being one of the real standouts on the table and we were happy to purchase it on the spot.
Founded almost 50 years ago, the Layo Teraga cooperative provides its smallholder members market access otherwise unavailable for family farms. This lack of organizing and access has historically led to lower prices and quality versus other Ethiopian regions, but we’re happy to see that trend shifting! This washed process lot consists primarily of the 74110 varietal grown around 2300 MASL. While this is a grade 2 lot, it was selected as a standout on a cupping table consisting of many coffees twice its price. Expect a bouquet of florals with a strong stonefruit backbone and a clean finish.
What we taste: peach rings, intensely floral
Net weight: 12 ounces
